Ayurveda’s Guide to Kick-Start Your Day

Ayurveda’s Guide to Kick-Start Your Day

The Ayurvedic way of life is all about having a well-established daily routine, wholesome food and quality sleep. Ancient scriptures claim that having a consistent routine brings regularity in mind and body that boosts energy, promotes clarity in thoughts and emotions, and heightens physical and mental functions. Let’s see some of the must-do morning rituals according to Ayurveda.

Rise and shine before the Sun

Ayurvedic practitioners suggest waking up at least 1-2 hours before sunrise. The time between 3-6 A.M. is considered most sattva (calm and serene) which aids the brain to be highly functional and refreshes the senses. The clear and calm surrounding helps to learn anything faster with better focus and with ease. Besides, starting the day early allows you to effectively plan the day and stay organized which is one of the keys to success.

Start with a positive thought

Before getting out of bed, just close your eyes and connect with your inner self. No matter where you are in life, each day starts fresh and there is always hope to change for the better. Take a deep breath and tell yourself to seize the day. Starting your day with a positive thought will have a significant effect on your mood and level of productivity over the remaining hours of the day.

Evacuate the bowels

Irregular bowel evacuation causes the accumulation of toxins in the body and leads to various health concerns and imbalances in doshas. Drinking 1-2 glasses of lukewarm water in the empty stomach creates a natural urge to defecate. A proper bowel movement also keeps the body light and active.

Tongue scraping and oil-pulling

The white and yellowish deposits on the tongue are a sign of toxin accumulation in the body and should be eliminated regularly. Scrapping the tongue helps to stimulate the internal organs, improves digestion and prevents bad breath.

Another traditional practice in Ayurveda is oil pulling by swishing a spoonful of natural oil in the mouth and pulling it in between the teeth. When the oil mixes with saliva, the oil absorbs all the toxins from the oral cavity, teeth, and gums and improves oral hygiene. Swish the oil for 5-10 minutes and spit it out.

Meditate and Exercise

As per the dosha clock, early morning is the time of vata, where air and ether dominate and is the best time to meditate, pray and exercise. Mild exercises like yoga, brisk walking helps with flexibility, improves circulation, and rejuvenates the mind and body. 15-20 minutes of exercise or meditation, helps ease stress and provides a sense of calm for the rest of the day.

Wholesome breakfast

While the popular adage is “Eat breakfast like a king”, Ayurveda recommends eating a light, nourishing, and wholesome breakfast. Home-cooked grains, sprouts or freshly boiled lentils with a side of fruits or herbal tea is the best way to fuel the body.

Adapt these simple and effective routines to attain your long-term health goals.
