Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term derived from two root words, "Ayus," meaning life, and, "Vid," meaning knowledge.  Ayurveda is the ancient healing system of India. It is highly individualized and encompasses dietary changes, herbal supplements, exercise, meditation and other special procedures. In Ayurvedic theory, the body is said to contain three primal forces (doshas) that work in tandem: vata, pitta, and kapha; and illness can develop if they are unbalanced.

Each of us has a unique proportion of these three forces that shapes our nature. If Vata is dominant in our system, we tend to be thin, light, enthusiastic, energetic, and changeable. If Pitta predominates in our nature, we tend to be intense, intelligent, and goal-oriented and we have a strong appetite for life. When Kapha prevails, we tend to be easy-going, methodical, and nurturing. Although each of us has all three forces, most people have one or two elements that predominate.

Ayurvedic herbal products are a key component of Ayurveda. In general, ayurvedic herbal products are used to cleanse the body, boost defense against disease, and keep the mind, body, and spirit in balance.

What is CA Prop 65?

The purpose of California's Proposition 65 is to notify consumers that they are being exposed to chemicals that are known to cause cancer and/or reproductive toxicity. Consumers can decide on their own if they want to purchase or use the product. A Proposition 65 warning does not necessarily mean a product is in violation of any product-safety standards or requirements. Lead, a heavy metal, is listed under Proposition 65 as known to the State of California to cause both cancer and reproductive harm. Manufacturers must warn consumers if they will be exposed to lead in their products in an amount that exceeds the safe harbor level of 0.5 micrograms per day.

What is Heavy Metal Toxicity?

Heavy metals is the term used for a group of elements that have particular weight characteristics. They are on the "heavier" end of the periodic table of elements. Some heavy metals – such as cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, vanadium, strontium, and zinc are essential to health in trace amounts. Others are non-essential and can be harmful to health in excessive amounts. These include cadmium, antimony, chromium, mercury, lead, and arsenic – these last three being the most common in cases of heavy metal toxicity.  In the dietary supplements industry, manufacturers routinely test products for levels of the following: Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead and Mercury. The specifications for these heavy metals and the results of heavy metal testing are usually presented in terms of Parts Per Million (ppm).  As an example of the scope of a heavy metal's toxicity, lead can affect the nervous system, gastrointestinalsystem, cardiovascular system, blood production, kidneys, and reproductive system.

How safe are your products?

Our products are routinely tested for Heavy Metals and Microbiological parameters to make sure they meet our stringent purity standards, and addition to our potency standards. We follow all the cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practices) mandated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. These norms prescribe stringent standards for quality control, traceability and more. When used as directed and in traditional formulas/doses, our Ayurvedic products have an excellent safety record.

Does Sandhu® Products comply with FDA GMPs?

All of our products are manufactured in compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) set forth by the U.S. FDA in our cGMP –certified facility at Livermore, CA. GMPs are related to the manufacturing, packaging, labeling or holding of dietary supplements. Manufacturers are required to evaluate their products’ identity, purity, strength and composition. Other requirements deal with such matters as quality control, the design and construction of manufacturing plants, record keeping and consumer complaints.

Each batch of our product undergoes a series of stringent tests at our state-of-the art facilities in the United States. These tests include: species identification, assay of the active compound (to ensure potency), heavy metals testing and microbiological analysis.

Are your products GMO free?

Yes.

Do you perform testing on animals?

No.

Should I consult a physician before taking an herbal supplement?

You should always consult a physician or other health care professional if you are seeking a diagnosis and/or treatment for any types of disease or disorder.  An increasing number of doctors believe that herbal products are helpful in supporting the various structure-function aspects of human health, such as Blood Sugar Regulation and Joint Health.

Can your herbal products be taken safely along with prescription medications?

Generally, herbal supplements do not interfere with prescription drugs; however, it is recommended that you tell your health care practitioner which herbal (and other dietary) supplements you are taking. In some cases, herbal products may make it possible and desirable to reduce the dosage of the prescription medicine. Also, some prescription drugs have adverse side effects that are more pronounced when combined in the body with the active components of some natural products.

Why do you use standardized extracts in your products?

A standardized extract is an herbal extract that has been processed so that it contains a specified percentage of a certain compound, the one known to be the active compound. The specified percentage is then listed on the finished product label with the intent to inform consumers that the product contains the listed amount of active compound and hence has a certain potency.

The concentration of active ingredient(s) present in a given raw herb (i.e. the herb before processing) can vary considerably due to various factors, including: the geographical location they are grown at, the varying climatic conditions within each location, nutrients available to each plant while growing up, level of growth and maturity of the plant part (root, bark, leaf, fruit), time of harvesting, and post harvesting handling and process.

Therefore, Sandhu Products uses standardized extracts of the appropriate plant part to ensure consistent levels of active ingredient(s) in each dose taken by you, which in turn ensures consistent efficacy and results.
