Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) Health Benefits
Ashwagandha's health benefits are derived from a complex set of active constituents, mainly alkaloids and withanolides (steroidal lactones). As Ashwagandha’s botanical name (Withania somnifera) implies, Withanolides are relatively unique to the genus Withania of this herb (whose species is Somnifera). In addition, Ashwagandha contains Alkaloids, which are an active constituent category found in many botanicals.
Some manufacturers use the leaves (or leaves and roots) of Ashwagandha in their extracts. However, Ayurveda dictates that the leaf-extract is only to be used for occasional external, topical use or internally only when the leaf’s cytotoxic Withaferin A is warranted. On the other hand, root-based Ashwagandha extract is recommended for internal use when the goal is to enjoy the desired adaptogenic and general health-enhancement benefits. The majority of Ashwagandha clinical trials are based on the use of root-based extracts, and only root-based Ashwagandha extracts are listed in the Indian Pharmacopoeia, the British Pharmacopoeia and the U.S. Pharmacopoeia.
